Trump's Woke Alarm Misses The Continent's True Danger: Technological Stagnation.

The recent US security policy document offers a flawed assessment of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "progressive" policies represent an grave threat to European civilization. Yet, this argument rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The true danger facing the EU is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Economic Divide Between Europe and the US

The data reveal a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. Over this period, European income per person fell from over three-quarters to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a higher per capita income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly half of the global top fifty tech companies are American, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Question

The growing disparity is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology leadership is decidedly US-centric. In the last fifty years, hundreds of American startups have grown into companies valued at more than $10bn, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity raises a pressing issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, what is the EU stand? Most analysts concede it is essentially a contest between two between the United States and China, with Europe entering at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of key factors explain this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and agile system for funding startups. Europe still lacks a genuine unified investment market, a factor that limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a service under a single set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population, is split among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these challenges, one can find causes for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have started to propose substantial change. Key reports on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for sweeping reforms.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, these assets might enable far greater levels of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses considerable strengths: skilled human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly boost economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a critical crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, Europe's technological decline has been steady. However, without decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
