Together Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a dare for partners in committed relationships who appreciate scary movies: Settle in with your significant other and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit just made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like typical biological terror, but within Together exists a deep contemplation about how we choose to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for over ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a particular energy to their characters, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The narrative commences when Millie and Tim transition from the metropolis to the countryside for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, admittedly, but that’s largely where the conventions end. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the two tumble into an underground cave. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity begins influencing the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a methodically building fright fest, weaving in bits of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but never too gross) body horror, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director weaves these elements together neatly and delivers them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and removed from his network of friends. He is terrified of the idea of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in Together avoids making Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

The couple face the type of challenges that come with long-term unions a decade in. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these fears of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory never feels hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a powerful case for staying single. Conversely, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could act as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the ending sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your partner and say, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can experience right now.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu at present.
