The fast bowler Set to Play a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on 21 November in Perth.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of taking part.

"We know that time is getting short and multiple considerations around that, not just his injury, but additional elements," he commented.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a key capacity. Ideally it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Injury History

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand recently after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of several home seasons in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the contest.

Bailey noted that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the national team for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs regardless. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
